Patiala Suits- The Special Punjabi Salwar Kameez

Indian attire is like worldwide for the grace and elegance that it imparts after wearing. Among the many different types of Indian clothing which people like are the Punjabi suits. These are the traditional wear of women from the state of Punjab in India. Unlike the saree, which is traditionally worn in all parts of India, the Punjabi suits are generally worn by the Punjabi community members living in India and abroad, but this does not mean that the others do not wear it. Among the Punjabi suits, one typical style which is particularly distinctive is that of the Patiala Salwar.

A salwar is the bottom wear garment. A kameez is the top wear garment which is generally a long kurta or short kurti with side slits and some other style elements. However, a Patiala salwar suit is different in that it comes with a totally different style and is easily recognizable. It gives a loose, bulge look and comes with a number of pleats stitched from top. These pleats are not done in the same manner as the gent pants which fall straight but with a much higher number and allowed to go from front to back, in draped manner. Usually, the fabric consumption in Patiala salwar is much higher than the normal salwar. It takes about 3 meters of fabric in construction.

So, what makes the Patiala salwar special? Besides being a distinctive evergreen fashion item, it is the sheer comfort of wearing it which makes it hugely popular. Being loose and pleated multiple times, it does not restrict the movement, gives a sense of freedom and allows easy passage of air through the fabric during the summers. This makes it good for wearing both during the day and perform all works at home or in office. Due to its style, it can also be worn in the parties and functions.

Now, what types of fabrics are generally used in its making? Since the basic purpose of this style is to make a breathable garment which fits loose on the body, naturally those fabrics are ideal which do not hug the skin and are known to allow passage of air through. Further, due to the fall of the pleats, the fabric has to be easy flowing, soft and light weight. So, georgette, crepe, cotton are some of the ideal fabrics used for this purpose. If heavier fabrics are used, this might be difficult to carry. Therefore, right fabric selection also becomes important for getting Patiala salwar made.
