If there is one garment which Indian women like to wear, it is most certainly the Indian kurti. The word ‘kurti’ is derived from the word ‘kurta’ which is essentially used in reference to the full sleeve long piece of garment, generally having a loose fit. The word ‘kurti’ is used in reference to the women and it is a more fitted garment worn by the ladies in India as compared to a kurta worn by males. Indian kurtis do have style elements of their own which make them choicest piece of garment for all occasions.

It is quite common to find girls and women wear these at home, in office, at parties and even during festive occasions. Cotton and linen kurtis are flavors of the summer season. These are light breathing fabrics which do not cause unease during the summers. These can be worn with ease at home. Similarly, these are also worn at the offices. Whether dyed in beautiful light colours or imprinted with different designs or even embroidered with hand or machines using different embellishments, these are worn in office with confidence.

Even during the parties and festivals, these made in partywear fabrics, such as silks, and in bright colours make you look graceful and elegant. These partywear pieces are generally given a richer decoration which makes you stand out from others. The fabrics used may not be of natural origin.

Kurtis come in different styles of sleeves, neckline and hemline. The sleeves and the neck type are two main areas of innovation for latest designs or styles of the garment. The sleeves can be full length, half length, three fourth length or even sleeveless. Sleeves can be simple or these can even be of different styles, such as bell sleeves, cape sleeves etc. Similarly, these can have a V-neck, U-neck, boat neck, jewel neck or any other variants. In terms of hemline, these can be two types- short and long kurtis. The short length kurtis generally have length till the waist line. However, the long kurtis can be from thigh level. If it becomes even longer, these are commonly referred to as ‘kurta’ even when these are to be worn by ladies.

There is no denying the fact that these are very popular clothing for women in India because of its suitability for various occasions, ease of wearing and comfort fit. However, it shall be known that these are not very bold garments just like the western garments.
