Indian Gowns Have the Best of the West and the East

India is largely a conservative society which has adopted the modernity with certain checks and balances. And, this is clearly reflected in the evolution of their clothing patterns over a period of time. While traditional clothing is still quite popular and has not yet been lost, there is a considerable amalgamation of the different western styles of clothing with the traditional ones. This has worked to satisfy both the desire for adopting the elements of western clothing as also to retain the key elements of traditional clothing. For this reason, the clothing is called Indo-western or fusion wear.

Key Elements of Indian Gowns

Indian gowns, as these are called popularly to distinguish these from the western gowns, are one such piece of garments. These are generally one-piece garments, similar to the western gowns. However, these are devoid of too much styling cuts or drapes. These are generally not shapely enough to fit the feminine figure but rather a bit more conservatives so as not to show body contours. Further, the essence of Indian gowns lies in its non-revealing construction. Another key element is that the gowns are generally flared from waist downside or are A-line in construction. Sometimes, the gown is also accompanied by an outer-wear jacket to further add to the style element.

Gowns are Different From Nightwear Gowns

These indo western dresses are essentially meant to be worn during special occasions and are not worn as casual or day wear. Some people in India often confuse these gowns with the night wear gowns, which are generally called ‘nighties’. Night wear gowns are also single-piece garments but these are exclusively meant to be worn before sleeping. Therefore, this distinction needs to be clearly understood since these garments are vastly different from each other in every aspect, be it their construction or usage.

Since the gowns are generally worn as evening wear, in parties and functions and during weddings, these are generally embellished or decorated in different ways to give these richer look. Therefore, you would often find these to be embroidered. More drapes, frills and style elements are also introduced in gowns because of their being a perfect party wear garment.
