Innovation in Sarees Has Stemmed Its Decline in Popularity

There was a time when the saree was the undisputed queen of ethnic garments for women. The way a saree was worn traditionally was an effort in mastering the art of drape. And, it was certainly not easy. We all must have seen women in our households struggle with the drape and the fall of the saree. Often, it has to be tried multiple times before getting it done in the right way. Every time a saree is worn the question that lingers in mind of women is to drape it such a manner that the fall of saree is perfect when tucked inside on wait and the length of the saree and also that of the pallu over the shoulder has to be just perfect. Any mismatch means that all has to be undone and then the process is repeated again with corrections. So, it took multiple trials before doing it satisfactorily.

As if this draping effort was not enough a problem, the very way in which it was required to be worn meant that the ladies could not move very comfortably and had to constantly watch for the drapes and the fall to keep it correct all the time. Further, the saree is quite heavy to wear. Even the normal casual wear saree made of light material is heavier than other casual wear garment simply because of the length of the saree which has to be wrapped around the waist and worn.

With the passage of time, and the onset of more liberal mindset, the women folk began to adopt other easily wearable and more comfortable clothes, slowly pushing the saree to redundancy. Ladies suits took over the mantle from the saree, especially in the northern parts of India. So much so that the sarees are now essentially seen being worn only during official events or festive occasions. Just as it would seem that the tradition of wearing the saree would soon be lost as not many girls or ladies of the new generation are seen wearing it, certain innovations devised by fashion designers and its use in Bollywood movies seem to have stemmed the decline. So, what are these critical changes?

Fashion designers worked on behavior of the customers to define why the preference to sarees is getting reduced. To overcome these issues, the sarees had to be remodeled to be more wearable, fashionable and easy to use. The result of this innovation was the pre-stitched saree, also called the readymade saree. With the masterstroke of stitching the problem of draping was resolved once and for all. Since it could be worn like a skirt, the transformation was amazing. Then, the blouse piece replaced with a variety of top wear in different styles. This further changed from one single boring style of clothing to providing multiple options. Yet another significant change was the joining of the top wear garment with the saree to make it into a saree dress, which was to be worn like a gown. Hence, the name saree gown came into existence.
