It is said that Lord Krishna draped unlimited length of saree around Draupadi when Duryodhana was striping it off her. This one incident which is always present in the backdrop of our minds highlights the importance of saree in those times. Saree was one piece of clothing which primarily was used to cover the modesty of women. It was also a single long piece of clothing which imbibed the art of draping and showcased the female folks in graceful manner. The same holds true even today. While the usage of saree varies from one part of India to another, and also across different age groups, it is a fact that saree is primarily considered a piece of clothing which is best suited to hide the modesty of women.

Indian Saree

In the modern times, wherein the women folk enjoy more freedom and confidence, the Indian saree is not just a piece of covering the female contours. With minor alterations in the style of wearing, it can become an article of looking sensuous. Modern women wear it for looking really gorgeous. There is no holding back to showing your glamour by wearing sarees these days. This is even showcased in our movies as well. Irrespective of whether it is the Hindi cinema or Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or any other, it is worn by both the main lead actresses and older mammas, for dramatically different purposes. Quite evidently, the saree is very versatile in usage. It can be used for looking conservative as well as flamboyant. It is used as an office wear formal dress. You can see many female government officers wearing this Indian clothing. Similarly, it is also commonly worn in parties and functions as well as in homes.

With so much of fondness for this garment among the Indian population, both in India and among those living abroad, it has been subject of many different innovations. These innovations have centered on the need of the modern woman who does not want to spend many minutes in draping the saree and would want to wear it as a garment for comfort rather than like a load of clothing over the body. Yet another major reason for evolving styles of the saree is the requirement of the women to slowly adapt to the western styles. So, there are styles available in market which are a mix of saree with gowns and dhotis. These do not take away the larger essence of saree but bring in a new element of styling which makes you look modern, non-conservative and bold.

While a lot has been mentioned about the saree, its accompaniment-the blouse piece- has also underwent many changes. No longer are the blouse pieces just the traditional one which were hooked up in front, rather these have taken the shape of western tops. And, not to mention, there is definitive changes in the styles of these tops which makes these blouse pieces very interesting. One of the major benefits of these changes is that the women today have many more options to choose from.
