Pre-stitched Sarees-An Innovation in Tradition

Draping a 9yards saree is not everybody’s cup of coffee! So, designers came up with a unique solution of pre-stitched sarees that allows you to wear the saree in 5 seconds. You heard it right! And these ready-to-wear sarees offer you the same grace that you find in pleats while you settle for a traditional saree. The good news is that the pleats are already in place; simply wear it as a skirt, zip it up, and let the pallu fall.

A Small Detour

Many believe that Bollywood celebs introduced this look in the mid-2000s. However, according to a recent TOI article, the “Kalpana sari,” a brand that rose to prominence in the 1960s, was created by Late Shobhana Lahoti, who came up with the concept of a ready-made saree for adult ladies with the same poetic pleats and a magnificent pallu fall that you find in a traditional saree. “Unfortunately, this plan did not seem to work, and the wearers did not feel comfortable wearing a pre-pleated saree" by Vijaykumar Lahoti, Shobhana Lahoti's son, said. However, the concept had germinated. And one day, when he observed his young daughter playing in her mother's saree, he had the uncommon idea to create a saree specifically for his daughter, and the rest is history. The kids' saree took a year or two to catch on. Between the 1980s and the 2000s, the concept of the kid's saree expanded outside Pune too. It was also a point of discussion in other countries. Initially, the market was only for youngsters, but as time went on, they began to create more versions of pre-stitched sarees for adult women as well. And the trend caught on like wildfire.
